A Stroke occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. A Stroke is a medical emergency, and prompt treatment is crucial. Early action can reduce brain damage and other complications. Strokes can be classified into two main types: Ischemic Strokes, caused by a blockage in a blood vessel, and Hemorrhagic Strokes, caused by bleeding in the brain.
Symptoms of a Stroke vary depending on the part of the brain affected but often include sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, particularly on one side of the body, confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, trouble seeing in one or both eyes, trouble walking, dizziness, and severe headache with no known cause.
The causes of Stroke depend on its type. Ischemic Strokes, the most common type, are caused by blockages or narrowing of the arteries that provide blood to the brain, leading to reduced blood flow. This blockage can result from a clot or buildup of fatty deposits in the blood vessels. Hemorrhagic strokes occur when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, leading to bleeding in or around the brain. Common risk factors for Strokes include High Blood Pressure, Smoking, Diabetes, High Cholesterol, Obesity, and Heart Disease. Lifestyle factors, such as poor diet and lack of exercise, also contribute to Stroke risk.
While not a cure for stroke, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers complementary therapies that can significantly aid in recovery and rehabilitation. Dr. Goh TCM & Health Management incorporates a holistic approach to stroke management, focusing on restoring the balance of Qi (life energy) and the harmony of Yin and Yang to promote healing and recovery. Our TCM treatments are non-invasive and personalised, tailored to each patient’s specific needs, and may include:
Acupuncture is used to stimulate specific acupoints to restore the balance of Qi and improve circulation. This treatment helps alleviate post-stroke symptoms such as muscle weakness, spasticity, and speech difficulties. It promotes neurological recovery by enhancing the flow of energy and blood to the brain, which can accelerate the healing process.
Tuina involves Therapeutic Massage Techniques to promote Qi flow, relieve tension in the muscles, and improve joint mobility. This treatment is effective in reducing Muscle Stiffness, Improving Flexibility, and supporting the Recovery of Motor Functions.
Mind Balancing Treatment utilises Meridian Head Massage Technique that focuses on stimulating specific acupoints and meridian lines on the head and scalp. This treatment plays a vital role in managing stroke recovery by addressing both physical and mental aspects of healing by improving blood circulation, balancing Qi energy and enhancing cognitive function.
While Traditional Chinese Medicine as an alternative treatment cannot prevent a Stroke, regular treatments like Acupuncture and herbal medicine can help manage risk factors such as High Blood Pressure, Stress, and Cholesterol levels, potentially reducing the likelihood of a Stroke.
A full recovery from Stroke depends on several factors. Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatments can be initiated during the recovery phase once the patient’s condition is stable. Early intervention with therapies like Acupuncture and herbal medicine can aid in faster recovery and better outcomes.
Common risk factors for strokes that individuals need to watch out for include High Blood Pressure, Smoking, Diabetes, High Cholesterol, Obesity, and Heart Disease. Lifestyle factors, such as poor diet and lack of exercise, also contribute to Stroke risk.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a comprehensive health and wellness treatment that has progressively developed over the years, backed by clinical and scientific research. For best results, it’s important to consult a certified medical doctor or specialist before beginning any treatment.
