What is Dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term for a decline in cognitive ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. It affects memory, thinking, and reasoning and can also lead to changes in personality and behaviour. Alzheimer’s Disease is the most common type of dementia, but other forms include Vascular Dementia, Lewy Body Dementia, and Frontotemporal Dementia. The progression of symptoms varies depending on the cause, and while some types are irreversible, early management can improve quality of life.

CAUSES

What causes Dementia?

Dementia is caused by damage to brain cells, which can result from various factors, including neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Stroke, Brain Injuries, or other medical conditions. Genetics, age, and lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and cognitive engagement also contribute to dementia risk. Vascular issues that affect blood flow to the brain, infections, and other health conditions can further increase the likelihood of developing dementia.
