CONDITION

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a long-term condition that arises when the pancreas either produces insufficient insulin or the body cannot efficiently use the insulin it produces. Insulin is a key hormone responsible for managing blood sugar levels. When diabetes is not properly controlled, it can lead to high blood sugar (hyperglycemia), which over time can cause serious harm to various organs and systems, particularly the nerves and blood vessels.

Diabetes symptoms can sometimes emerge suddenly, though in the case of type 2 diabetes, they may be subtle and develop gradually over several years. Common signs include excessive thirst, frequent urination, blurred vision, fatigue, and unintentional weight loss. If diabetes is left unmanaged, it can cause damage to blood vessels in critical organs like the heart, eyes, kidneys, and nerves.

CAUSES

What causes Diabetes?

The precise cause of type 1 diabetes is still unknown, and research continues to explore its origins. Type 2 diabetes, however, usually stems from problems with insulin production or how the body uses insulin. When blood sugar regulation fails, levels continue to rise. Factors that increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes include physical inactivity, being overweight or obese, having a family history of the condition, and being in a pre-diabetic stage.

TREATMENTS

Treatment Options

Diabetes is traditionally classified into three types: upper, middle, and lower Xiao-ke, each with distinct symptoms. The upper type is marked by excessive thirst, the middle by excessive hunger, and the lower by excessive urination. These types are closely linked to the lungs, stomach, and kidneys, respectively, and all are connected to Yin deficiency. Dr. Goh TCM & Health Management approaches treatment holistically, focusing on restoring the balance of Qi energy throughout the entire body. This non-invasive treatments are customised to meet each patient’s specific needs and may include a combination of the following therapies:

Critical Illness Acupuncture supports treatment of diabetes by stimulating specific acupoints that help regulate the body’s insulin production, improve blood circulation, and reduce inflammation. It may enhance the function of the pancreas, supporting better glucose metabolism, and help balance hormones that affect blood sugar levels. Additionally, acupuncture can reduce stress and promote relaxation, which is important for managing diabetes, as stress can elevate blood sugar. This treatment complements conventional diabetes management by addressing both physical and emotional factors involved in the condition.
