CONDITION

What is Hypertension?

Hypertension, commonly referred to as high blood pressure, is a condition where the blood vessels consistently experience elevated pressure. Blood pressure is the force exerted by blood against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps it throughout the body. When this pressure is consistently high (typically 140/90 mmHg or above), the heart has to work harder, leading to hypertension.

Many individuals with hypertension may not exhibit noticeable symptoms and might be unaware of their condition. When symptoms do occur, they can include early morning headaches, nosebleeds, irregular heartbeats, changes in vision, and ringing in the ears. In more severe cases, symptoms may include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, confusion, anxiety, chest pain, and muscle tremors. If hypertension is not managed, it can result in ongoing chest pain (angina), heart attacks, heart failure, irregular heart rhythms, and even sudden death.

CAUSES

What causes Hypertension?

Several factors can increase the risk of developing hypertension. These include poor dietary habits (such as high salt intake, diets rich in saturated and trans fats, and low consumption of fruits and vegetables), lack of physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, and being overweight or obese. Environmental factors, particularly air pollution, also play a significant role in the development of hypertension and related conditions. Additional risk factors include a family history of hypertension, being over the age of 65, and having other health conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease.

TREATMENTS

Treatment Options

Hypertension is strongly associated with the body’s imbalance in life energy which can be a result of, or a combination of Yang-deficiency, Qi-deficiency, and Yin-deficiency. Treatments for hypertension are available at Dr.Goh TCM and Health Management and are tailored towards the needs of patients. The treatments are non-invasive and focuses on addressing the root of the problem, restoring the body to its natural state of balance for better health and wellbeing. The treatments may include a combination of below:

Scalp Acupuncture supports treatment of hypertension by stimulating specific points and areas on the scalp that correspond to regions of the brain involved in regulating blood pressure and cardiovascular function. By targeting these points and areas, scalp acupuncture helps to reduce stress, enhance circulation, and promote relaxation, which can lead to lower blood pressure levels. This technique may also influence the autonomic nervous system, helping to balance the body’s stress response and improve overall cardiovascular regulation.

Hypertension can be managed through various alternative treatments, including Acupuncture, which helps regulate blood flow and reduce stress. Herbal remedies are also known to support blood pressure management. Additionally, dietary and lifestyle changes—such as reducing heavy tasting food, increasing physical activity, and practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing or mindfulness—can greatly complement these treatments.

Although it is generally considered a chronic condition, blood pressure can often be maintained within a healthy range with proper care. Long-term adherence to dietary guidelines, regular exercise, and stress management can significantly reduce the need for ongoing treatment.

People with a family history of Hypertension, those who consume high-sodium diets, lead sedentary lifestyles, are overweight, or are under frequent stress are at a higher risk.
